Full disclosure: I'm not a native Westerner. I'm a transplant, having grown up in the Northeast. And while I've lived in California most of my adult life, and love my Western home with the zeal of the converted, I still do succumb to a touch of homesickness every year at this time because I know I'm missing the multicolored glory that is a New England fall.
I didn't think there was much I could do to bring Technicolor back into my Octobers, but Deanna Kizis has the scoop on how I can add not just yellows but the whole autumnal spectrum of red, orange, and gold to my yard. Even better news: It's not too late for this year. A few key flowers and shrubs, which you can probably find in mature form at a garden center, can have your backyard bursting with more color than a postcard from Vermont.
Now if only Deanna could help me get pancake syrup from my Japanese maples...
In her new cookbook, chef Hannah Che explores the plant-based traditions of Chinese cuisine with recipes that are healthy, sustainable, and rich in history.
