Seasoned California road-trippers will remember The Orchard at Apple Lane as an essential stop when traveling along Interstate 80 in the vicinity of Auburn. And while many of us may have fallen out of the habit of pulling over there in recent years—the old standby had admittedly lost a little shine over the decades—The Orchard is now back, better than ever. A family with roots both literal and figurative in the area purchased the farm and polished it up like one of the Arkansas Black apples that they sell by the box at the now thriving farmstand.

The buildings have all had a fresh coat of paint, the once modest little farmstand is now fully stocked with local provisions, and you can pick your own fruit in season. So whether you're a regular traveler between the Bay Area and Tahoe, or are just looking for a new road-trip destination for late summer or fall, make sure the revitalized Orchard at Apple Lane is on your itinerary. (And if you can't get there now, read all about The Orchard and the talented family breathing new life into it here.)
