Like an apple, this remodeled ranch house is dark on the outside, light and fresh on the inside. Photo by Adam Rouse.

Hello from Sunset Home & Design,

The inspiration for this San Mateo ranch house renovation came from an unlikely source: fruit. “The contrast between the dark exterior and light interior was inspired by fruit,” says homeowner Katie Morgenroth. “When you cut open a dragon fruit or an apple, you're met with a bright, refreshing color that contrasts with the outside. We wanted to create a similar feeling of surprise and optimism upon entering the house.”

She and her husband Kyle tapped Steven Stept of Feldman Architecture to oversee the remodel of their 1960s ranch home that had asbestos lurking in its tiles, no flooring, wallpaper on every surface, an outdated electrical system, and a closed-off kitchen.

Steven and team transformed the home, making good use of the lush surroundings and views of the adjacent nature preserve. Take a look at the stunning renovation here.

Live well,
